Note | Bob never married, although he had a girl friend for many years. The family favoured this match, but Bob's inclination may have lain in a different direction. He served in the army, and his pay book still exists. He was very short sighted, and this book contains details of his eye prescription. The exact chronolgy of his work history is not known for certain, and accounts of it have minor discrepencies. However: he had a career in nursing, where he worked at Rainhill Hospital (for mental patients), teaching handicrafts to the patients among his other duties; he worked for the Parks and Gardens Dept, becoming very knowledgable about plants (he had a fine garden and often gave advice to other members of the family); he rose to be the Head Green Keeper for Norris Green/West Derby. He could play the concertina and piano. He taught himself to use the typewriter. He had a knack for languages, learning Spanish and Esperanto. He lived with his mother at 118 Utting Avenue and remained there after her death. |
